The Dental Council of India (DCI) has prescribed a very comprehensive academic program for postgraduate students in the DCI MDS regulations of 2017. The two main programs in which the students develop their learning about the subject are journal review and seminars. The regulation mentions that the purpose of such programs, especially the journal review is active participation of not only the trainees but also the staff.
The programs should be designed to initiate discussion on the subject. As per the model checklist for the evaluation of presentations, ability to respond to questions on the topic has to be assessed. The participation of attending members is essential to start discussion. The attending members should also add their inputs to fill in the lacunae in the subject as it may not be possible to cover all the aspects of the topic by the presenting trainee. The faculty members by the virtue of their experience over the past years of teaching and learning contribute to the topic. However, for journal review, recent articles are generally discussed. It becomes very important for the attending trainees to actively participate in the discussion.
Postgraduate program was started at the Government College of Dentistry, Indore, in the year 2020. It was noticed that when journal review was given to a particular trainee the others did not participate at all. Certain steps were taken like the article was circulated in hard or soft copy to the faculty and fellow trainees 1 day before the presentation. It is a point of debate whether the article should be shared 1 day prior or much before the presentation day. However, this attempt proved futile and there was silence after the thank you slide.
This triggered an idea and a novel method was developed to increase the participation in postgraduate programs. The program was called SPOT JOURNAL REVIEW. An interesting and relevant article was selected for the spot journal and circulated to all trainees at the start of the month. A date for the spot journal review was planned at the end of the month. All the three trainees were supposed to prepare the journal review with appropriate audio visual aids. This went along with other learning programs of the trainees throughout the month. On the day of the spot journal review, one trainee was selected by following an appropriate random technique. The trainee presented the journal review on the spot. It was noticed that the program extended over a longer time than usual. Different trainees had explored different areas of subject matter. They had accessed different cross references. The subject matter coverage was much wider as compared to previous journal reviews.
The purpose of writing this letter is that most of the colleges may be struggling with interaction during the postgraduate programs. The Public Health Dentistry Department of various dental colleges of India has also been active in new methods of learning, teaching, and research. If the method proves useful, it may be incorporated at a larger scale.
